I’d only played a little bit of Shadowgate before Gary Butterfield suggested we play the MacVenture games for Watch Out for Fireballs! All three of the games we covered have their charms, but Uninvited was the undisputed star of the show.
Our protagonist and his sister get into a terrible car accident out in the country. He wakes up to find his sister missing, and his car ready to explode. The obvious place to look for her is the imposing manor before him… the one that happened to be home to a sorcerer and his prodigal apprentice who didn’t heed the warnings about dabbling in the darkest of the dark arts.
Uninvited is still full of punishing surprise deaths, but it’s the most inviting of the MacVenture games on the NES. As long as you don’t pick up that ruby, you’re free to explore, thwart ghosts, and solve the demonic mystery of this haunted home. Pro click.
