“I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream” is a chilling (literally) short story by Harlan Ellison that plays with the consequences of an omnipotent and vengeful AI who ends the world and spends eternity torturing five unlucky people. It’s very conceptual, but very limited in scope, and wouldn’t have made a good video game on its own.
Thirty years after the story’s initial publication, Cyberdreams worked with Harlan Ellison to expand the concepts of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream into one of the best adventure games of all time. It’s an interactive story about ironic punishments, viewed through the lens of a petty AI who knows what metaphor is, but cannot truly understand it.
